Ocean Camp San Carlos is a marine ecology field station supporting ocean discovery. It is a concept - as much as a place - that has evolved over the past twelve years to encourage an understanding of our relationship as humans to this beautiful blue planet. Our mission is to foster understanding, respect and love for the oceans and seas and everything in them. We aspire to teach and excite youngsters to learn more about our planet and the oceans. " --to motivate students to discover, explore, and to take action to protect the ecological relationships between the land, sea and atmosphere.

Sunset view from OceanCamp
OceanCamp San Carlos creates a space that encourages learning, sharing, exploring, and creative problem solving. We combine serious science with fun-filled sea activities. We use "live-cam" undersea exploration video cameras, snorkeling and tidal pool exploration where students learn about tidal variations, shore life diversity, phytoplankton structure, and marine mammal adaptation.

Exploring a local cove
This is Desert View base camp where the stark desert coast meets the tranquil Sea of Cortés. The shallow waters provides a safe place for snorkeling, even for beginners. Over 800 species of fish inhabit our waters, plus a variety of marine mammals including dolphins, sea lions and whales. Hiking trails climb ancient volcanic mountains and cactus forests for students to explore.

Ocean Camp classroom
Classroom activities are important, but we put our students on the scene in nature most of the time. Seminars and lesson plans, computer assisted learning, well, they are important. But our "hands-on" laboratory work, tidal pool field activities and desert trail hikes work better. We take underwater photos and video while snorkeling in shallow waters around a reef.

Discovering tidepools
Have you seen earth from space? A brilliant blue and white ball in the blackness. Oceans make up almost three-quarters of our planets surface -- yet more than half of the population has never touched the seas. Have you heard about the "JASON" project? We can connect you to a special Sea of Cortez JASON Web site, and add some special notes...
Like iron is attracted to a magnet -- bright, motivated youngsters and mentors gather at OceanCamp to work on personal growth, and learn to understand and protect the oceans. Roger Revelle would be proud. Guest lecturers from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in San Diego and the Scripps Oceanographic Society are invited to join our educators and communicators.
Additional Ocean Camp programs and connections with:
Pronatura, specializing in wetlands conservation on the campus of ITESM Guaymas-San Carlos extension; and Universidad de Sonora, Escuela de Contabilidad y Administración in Hermosillo.

Classes are now forming...
for Summer Camp classes. One week, or ten-day sessions include lodging in San Carlos, carefully prepared meals, local transportation, educational materials, laboratory fees, video /photography fees, and boat charter.

YES, English is spoken here. Classes and field activities are multi-lingual. Most instructors are post-graduate level and speak English as their native or second language. In the background, you can see ITESM Campus Guaymas-San Carlos. OceanCamp students interact socially with Mexican students who share ideas, and culture. Beach Clean-up Day is a favorite project for students and a way of "giving back" to San Carlos.

OceanCamp San Carlos is also a
state-of-the-art Virtual Laboratory and Video Conference Center through the magic of the Internet.
